Joining Phoenix as Chair

Together with Phoenix Artspace, we are delighted to announce that I have joined it as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Phoenix has been so central to my cultural experience of my 30-years in Brighton and Hove, and indeed, it set up the conditions for a project in 2006 that transformed my relationship with art and public space, which in turn led me to my placemaking and social practice arts career.

Joining as Chair is not just a way to give back, but a way to pay it forward too, as Phoenix looks ahead to some exciting times.

I recognise I am also standing on the shoulders of an incredibly dedicated, inspiring and creative team and outgoing Chair, Siân Prime, Senior Lecturer, Academic Lead: Enterprise, and Deputy Director: ICCE at Goldsmiths, and outgoing interim Chair, Alli Beddoes, Artistic Director and CEO, Lighthouse.

Phoenix Art Space is located in the centre of Brighton, established as a charity in 1995. It is studio home to 120 professional artists at all stages of their careers, and holds two public galleries, up to 12 free exhibitions per year and a year-round programme of community events, talks and presentations from artists and arts organisations, family fun days and short courses, one-day events & drop-in workshops.

To quote from the media release:

‘I am delighted to be joining the Phoenix Art Space team as Chair of its Board of Directors. Phoenix has long been at the heart of Brighton and Hove’s creative life, and I am honoured to join such a dynamic and innovative organisation and excited to work alongside the talented team to further enhance its impact and reach across the city and region.

With a long-standing tradition of fostering creativity, providing a platform for local artists, and engaging the community through a variety of programmes and exhibitions, Phoenix is looking forward to a bright and inspiring future. I look forward to playing my part in ensuring that Phoenix Art Space remains a cornerstone of artistic expression.’

Lucy Day, Executive Director of Phoenix Art Space said, ‘This a wonderful moment for Phoenix. To have someone as talented and experienced as Cara join us as Chair is a great privilege and I am very much looking forward to working with her through the next chapter of the Phoenix story.’
