“You’ve got to leave space for happy accidents.”

That’s the opening line of the Country Living feature on Hillside, Rottingdean – a garden designed and nurtured over more than 20 years by my partner Jude Galloway in close collaboration with the garden’s owner.

The June 2025 issue is a beautiful reflection on what long-term creative partnership can look like – in this case, through plants, place, and time. It’s not just a garden story – it’s a relationship story. A space grown and shaped together.

This feature also arrives at a new moment for us – Jude and I are beginning to work together in green and public spaces, combining our practices: Jude brings a deep knowledge of landscape, planting, and ecology; I bring expertise in placemaking, cultural venues, and visitor experience. Together, we’re co-creating living, responsive designs for cultural and heritage sites – gardens as conversations between people, place, and purpose.

Hillside won’t be an Open Garden this year, but there will be a special event in June to mark the feature – more on that soon.

In the meantime, you can see more of Jude’s work at: https://www.judegalloway.garden/hillside
